Dialogue 1 I think I need to learn how to type. Then do you know how to already? Well, I can type, but I have to look at the keys. Does that feel you done? It does. And now that so much work is done on the computer, it affects the way I do my job.

Dialogue 2 Did you say you're going to the computer store this afternoon? Yes. Did you want me to pick something up for you? Yeah. Could you pick up some floppies? Sure. 1.4 max double density? Right. Get me 10 of them.

Dialogue 3 What's that sound? Oh, my computer is new screen-free of play music. Do you like it?

Dialogue 4 When you're looking for something on the web, what search engine do you usually use? I usually use several different search engines at the same time. Different files are registered with different search engines. And different engines use different floppies to search. So they will all turn off different results.

Passage (Part 1) Office Automation is the application of computer and communication technology to improve the productivity of clerical and managerial office workers. The major functional components of an office automation system include text processing, electronic mail, information store and retrieval, personal assistance features, and task management. These may be implemented on various types of hardware and usually include a video display terminal, a keyboard for input, and a hard copy output device for letter quality printing. Initially, systems sold by major manufacturers were aimed at clerical and secretarial personnel. These were mainly developed to do word processing and record processing. More recently, attention has also been focused on systems which directly support the principles, managers, and professional workers.

Passage (Part 2) Such systems emphasize the managerial communications function. Electronic mail and filing permit a user to compose and transmit a message on an office automation system. Today's organizations have a wide variety of office automation hardware and software components at their disposal. That list includes telephone and computer systems, electronic mail, word processing, desktop publishing, database management systems, two-way cable TV, office-to-office satellite broadcasting, online database services, and voice recognition and synthesis. Each of these components is intended to automate a task or function that is presently performed manually.

Passage (Part 3) Experts agree that the goal can be accomplished when, first, the computer communication and office equipment are networked, and second, an office worker can easily access the entire system through a personal computer sitting on his or her desk. Then it will be possible to change substantially the way people work in an office.
